Does a low thyroid affect the liver?
My fiance went to the doctor and found out that he has a large amount of fat in his blood and his liver is over working itself. He has hypothyroidism (low thyroid) and has been off of his thyroid pills for 6 months. He may have high cholesterol, which is affected by the thyroid. Do you think the problems with his liver are a result of his low thyroid?
They also think he may have diabetes due to his symptoms. Would a low thyroid have any affect on this?
Your fiance may have the starting of what is
known as fatty liver disease. Let me explain:
Simple fatty liver usually doesn't cause a problem.
However, as more fat build up inside the liver
(fatty infiltration) it can causes damage to the liver
cells. The immune system of the body will respond
to this damage and cause inflammation to develop
inside the liver. This will cause the liver to enlarge
in size. (this is then known as Steatohepatitis).
The causes of fatty liver can be this:
alcohol consumption, diabetes, metabolic disorders,
insulin resistance, weight gain, losing weight too fast,
malnourishment, high cholesterol/triglyceride levels,
certain medications (like steriods) and others.
Cholesterol is a fat that circulates in the blood.
The liver makes cholesterol because it need it to
be used to make cell membranes. However, when
it goes too high it can cause clogging of the arteries
and also a fatty liver.
You asked about hypothyroidism. Yes, the thyroid
is what makes a hormone...known as thyroxine.
If it doesn't make enough, it can slow down the
metabolism of the body and it is very easy to gain
weight from it. It can cause a rise in the liver
enzyme blood testing when this takes place.
I would suggest that he be with a gastroenterologist
or hepatologist now. They may refer him to an
endocrinologist if the thyroid and diabetes are
found to be the cause.
It is very important that he follow any diet or
advice the doctor gives him. Most liver patients
are told, No alcohol and not to take any drugs
at all unless they are approved of or prescribed
by their doctors.
If the cause can be found and stopped, the liver
cells may heal...if not, it can lead to the liver
cells dying off and scar tissue forming inside
the liver (known as Cirrhosis of the liver).
I hope this has been of some help.

This is not a diagnosis...just some things it could be
based on what you posted. It may help to raise
questions he can ask his doctor about.
