is green tea or herbal tea good for the skin?
i heard it was good for the skin (both green tea and any herbal tea) is this true? thanks!
That entirely depends upon what you mean by 'good for the skin.' So... let's break it down:
1. Trace minerals. Tea contains many trace minerals and is therefore a great 'supplement' if you will, which can benefit the skin.
2. Anti-Oxidants. While there has been no definitive proof yet that the anti-oxidants in tea have anti-carcinogenic properties, you have nothing to lose from drinking tea. It is possible that the anti-oxidants in tea will prevent skin from prematurely aging due to the damage from free radicals.
3. Caffeine. The minute amount of caffeine in tea (generally about 1/3 of that in coffee) dilated the blood vessels, which will give he skin a nice blush, and assist with any circulation issues that you may have, which could help the skin.
4. Hydration. Drinking tea is a great way of keeping your body hydrated, which is key to having healthy and good looking skin. Most people do not realize that they are not as hydrated as they should be, and this lack of hydration is noticed symptomatically in the skin (dry skin). This is perhaps the most important way in which tea can help the skin, but can also be accomplished by just drinking enough water.
That said... there are other issues that can be addressed with tea, or herbal teas (tizanes). In South Africa, for example, where the tizane called Rooibos (red bush) is produced, people actually add the Rooibos tea to their bathwater to help alleviate dry skin/eczema. I can say first hand that this helps as my wife suffered from very dry skin during her pregnancies and the red tea helped her noticeably. While there are many specific examples of ways in which various infusions can help various issues, there are too many to go into in this missive.
