Are rose hips, garlic, sunflower seeds, and AVC a good supplement combination for over all health in my horses?
I have two horses, both are kept in a large paddock with a run in shelter, and hay, and fresh water. they are on a regular deworming routine, and are exercised a couple times a week. i have used all of these supplements in the past and would like to combined them. if you have any comments or ideas it would be greatly appreciated. i have talked to my vet and she feels this would be appropriate but i would like to hear some ideas from fellow horse owners.
details on the horses...
Chance: is a 25 yr old standardbred. she was a rescue horse and is blind in one eye and has a tendon problem. she has also recently developed a heart murmur. she is feed a senior pellet feed mixed with warm water (too help with choking) she has trouble keeping weight on and i would like to introduce a corn oil and beet pulp supplement.
Beamer: is a 15 yr old quarter horse. i use him as my ridding horse. he is on a 10% sweet feed and also has his food mixed with warm water he prefers it that way.
I hesitate to give nutritional advice because it's so complicated and involved, but I like the fact that you have already spoken with your vet, are doing more research and seem to want the best for your horses, so...
1) Beet pulp - I would say go for it on both counts (horses). I absolutely love beet pulp. You can get it with and without molasses, shredded, if you prefer and it's easy to soak for a choke-prone horse. Great nutritional value, no inverted ratios, cheap and works well. Please check out Susan Garlinghouse's website (http://www.shady-acres.com/susan/index.shtml) for an excess of information --you might also want to look into alfalfa hay (again, Susan has a lot of wonderful information) for weight management with your senior.
2) Corn oil - I've yet to meet a horse that didn't like it, but I've found other things to better when it came to coats (BOSS - Black oil sunflower seeds) and I never really used it as extra calories, as beet pulp and rice bran worked so much better.
3) Speaking of rice bran, that is another option for weight management, but you'll want to make sure it is fortified to deal with the inverted calcium:phosphorous ratio.
4) Rose hips - What I do like about rose hips is that they are easy on the horse (digestibility) and rarely have any negative affects, that being said, I'm not convinced on the results, but if you've used them before and gotten good results, I will not steer you away.
5) Garlic - I would stay away from it all together. I love it, I'm even Sicilian ...but not for the horses. As a bug repellent, I think it sucks. I can remember walking into the barn and all the horses would just wreak of garlic (I didn't mind too terribly much, but I'm not sure all of the patrons felt the same way) but there were still mosquitoes and what not about. As for the other possible uses of garlic --there really hasn't been any reliable and substantial data showing benefits. However, garlic can (and usually does) produce a mildly (if not severely) anemic horse. Low, consistent doses look to destroy red blood cells (as do onions, btw) and put extra strain on the system, in fact, a high enough dose can be fatal to a horse, cows as well.
6) AVC - ??? I'm going to guess you meant apple cider vinegar (if not, ignore my ramblings). I've used it and while I wouldn't swear by it as a miracle worker, I wouldn't recommend against it. Hope I have helped a bit. I know I always like to get a second opinion from another when I'm dealing with feeding and supplements --it's just a shame that so many people are supplement happy today. I've always agreed, 'if it isn't broken, then don't fix it'.
