Second, working in the fields was hard and exhausting. The South, where African Americans were put to work, was hot and dry. The cotton plants they picked were sharp so they always had cuts on their hands. These cuts would get infected, but their owners still forced them to work under these extreme conditions. They had to suffer through the heat, the whippings, and infection. No matter how hard the work, Harriet kept her focus on being free.
