Metabolic changes of fat/glucose in diabetes?
What changes in the storage and mobilisation of glucose and triglycerides would you expect to see in Diabetes? What symptoms might a diabetic show as a result of these metabolic changes?
To answer the question- one needs to know the effects of Insulin on the metabolism and mobilization of sugar and fats (triglycerides)- well insulin converts Glucose to the long acting Glycogen and prevents mobilization of sugar- if these is no insulin- glycogen gets broken into glucose (rainsing blood sugar), and sugar gets mobilzed- further increasing blood sugar (the liver/muscle lose its glycogen stores, causing "wasting" and wt loss.)
Now Insulin also prevents gluconeogenesis- the conversion of fats into sugar and ketones- (that is why in the "Atkin's diet
carbohydrate intake is severely reduced allowing fat to be mobilized into ketones). In diabetes- without the insulin- triglycerides are broken down into ketones which is turned into sugar- causing acidosis and wt loss. Hope this answer is helpful
