Can the supermarket really get away with this?
There was a sign that said Free Samples on a table next to a stack of Frosted mini Wheat boxes. So I opened a box and took and handful and put it on the table. An older lady came marching over yelling and embarassing me. She told me I had to pay for it. i calmly explained I didnt like the serial and I wasnt interested in purchasing it. She kept being irate so I knocked over the stack of boxes and ran. The police showed up at my house later that day and told me it would be just easier to not waste my time fighting a theft ticket an just pay them the outragious 5.95 for a box. So I pai and told them where to shove the cereal. This just seems to me to be bad vuisness practice. i will never shop there again. What do you think?
This was no joke. Happened at a Kroger in OH.
I couldnt help it. They pretty much had me cornered. I had to knock over the boxes.

Yeah don't ever go that store again. They probably don't want you there and are banned from it anyway.
Usually the free samples are displayed on some kind of platter on the table, not stacked next to the table. And sometimes they come in sample-size packaging (not a large $6 box).
If you had to open a large box cereal...that was not the free sample they were offering.
You did not act appropriately when:
1) you opened the box of cereal
-if free samples were not clearly visible/available, you should have asked
2) you aggravated and argued with the older lady and knocked over a stack of boxes.
-you should have apologized for the misunderstanding and paid for the cereal at this point. and the police would not have had to come to your house
3) you told them where to shove the cereal
You are the bad guy in this situation, you acted inappropriately.
When you start going to a different supermarket, be sure to use common sense and act appropriately (which is basic social responsibility). You don't need to burn another bridge.
