Data Recovery from old hard drive, found text file--but writing gone?
What I mean is that first I had a faulty hard drive I plugged in via USB enclosure. Couldn't find any files I'd ever saved on it, only factory settings and sample music/pics. I did a data recovery scan on it and found all the documents I'd created. I saved them to a working hard drive. However, when I go to open them, allI see is a bunch of nonsense. Symbols, random letters etc. What do I do now? Is the data truly gone?
Also, this was stupid of me I know, however, I'd been using Open Office to do the typing in rather than Microsoft Word (I prefer the ease of the program). I have Open Office on the working computer, too, so I don't know why it wouldn't be letting me open it. Is anyone familiar with recovering Open Office docs or should it all be the same?
Data recovery programs primarily sell hope, not results. Recovering a deleted file can be affected by so many things outside the control of the program that successful recoveries, as versus reported "recovered files", are rare.
Sorry, but those files are probably gone for good.
